Despite summer's delayed beginning (as always, because I have to remember this is Wyoming), I am looking forward to camping, hiking, backpacking, disc golfing, tubing down the river. Summer here is so brief, but it is lovely. A few weeks ago I weeded the flowerbed out back and planted a bunch of seeds (columbine, basil, lavender, mixed flowers), then spent the next two weeks fighting with a neighborhood cat over the area's proper purpose. The cat apparently saw the fresh, loose dirt as a perfect litter box. After attempting several methods of deterrent (cayenne pepper, mothball crystals, scaring the cat when possible, with hissing and pop-its), I gave in and bought some chicken wire. The other night I heard the cat out there yowling pitifully, as if constipated. I feel superior now, at least to one cat. My seedlings are coming up to brighten the weedy backyard, and the landlord even mowed down a bunch of the weeds this weekend.
In other news, I'm finishing books, waiting excitedly for my vacation in early July (a few days in Seattle with family, then a few days in Honolulu for Kai's wedding!), settling into my library job and very much enjoying it, and readying myself for online grad school in August (which includes a weekend orientation in Alabama). Also, Wes and I have recently become addicted to backgammon. Since Friday night we're 4 and 4. Playoffs to come.
