Warning: Library-centric post

Three weeks into my graduate program and I'm feeling pretty good about things. There is a lot of reading, but what am I if not an experienced reader? I've been told it's OK, and even encouraged, to skim. So skim I will. I remember reading 500 to 1,000 pages every week during my final semester of college. I don't want to repeat that.

It's hard to skim, though, when the content is interesting. This week's readings have focused largely on the history of libraries and information organization. I find that fascinating. I chose an article about medieval cataloging for this week's writing assignment, and I had fun doing it. Did you know the first libraries and catalogs were in monasteries?

In addition to history, we have been discussing many other fields:
• Sociology
• Communication
• Economics
• Linguistics
• Marketing
• Social services
• Systems theory
• Policy and law
• Psychology
• Management

See, interesting, right? I knew this was perfect for me, as one who has always had trouble choosing just one of anything, much less one career. It's nice to have my brain working to understand all manner of concepts. Though I imagine by early December I'll be very ready for a break from acronyms and the term "information science."
